How I helped my client lose 8 lbs of regain during the holidays last year.

It was around this time last year that I started working with my client Emily. Emily came to me at almost 3 years post op and she was approaching her 2nd holiday season. And she was TERRIFIED.

I remember her saying the first time I met with her, “Jamie, I’m already experiencing nearly 22 lbs of regain. How in the world am I supposed to NOT keep gaining this time of year, let alone work on losing it?”

Emily’s fears were valid. And if you’re reading this, struggling and white-knuckling it through regain, and already feeling panicked that to top it all off the holidays are quickly approaching, you’re not alone. And I see you.

As people who have battled our weight lifelong, for so many of us, we would ALWAYS gain weight over the holidays. The last two months of the year roll around and with it all the peppermint mocha lattes, sugar cookies, and pumpkin spice galore. In the past, you may have heavily fallen into the binge/restrict cycle this time of year, and just because you had surgery, doesn’t mean those lifelong habits have broken.

So Emily and I set out to tackle the holidays last year with confidence. And here’s the plan we came up with together:

1. Instead of falling into the restrict/binge cycle she focused on balance.
2. She focused on CONSISTENCY and learned to be FLEXIBLE with her habits and routine.
3. She worked very heavily on mindset, mindfulness, and creating new traditions that didn’t revolve around food.

And guess what? By January 1 she was down 8 of the 22 lbs of regain she was struggling with. YES, she was able to tackle the regain AND start off the new year without feeling like she needed to make a long list of extreme resolutions.

You can and you should *eventually* work towards a balanced diet. To get back to a place where you are having balanced meals with ALL nutrients (protein, fats and carbs)

Which means, all foods can fit... even the “indulgent” foods BUT there’s a caveat - these foods don’t fit all of the time.

We want to get out of the all-or-nothing mentality on our WLS journey. We didn’t have WLS to be stuck on another diet for the rest of our lives, we did it for the freedom and help.

So, along with “not all the time” comes “not all at once” either!

After about 1 year post-op, the goal is to figure out the time and place to start adding these foods to your routine and HOW do you add them in so you are truly finding balance

The first year is all about establishing healthy habits that will, hopefully, set you up for success in the future. This all takes time to learn and a lot of experimentation!
