Weight loss surgery and weight loss meds don’t destroy your metabolism—mistakes do. 😬

Let’s break it down: Your metabolism is your body’s engine, and BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is the number of calories your body burns just keeping you alive (think: breathing, circulating blood, even blinking!). When your BMR is healthy, your body can burn calories more efficiently—but certain habits can sabotage it:

👉 Mistake 1: Not eating enough.
Undereating long-term (and not increasing your portions as your body changes) teaches your body to conserve energy by lowering your BMR. Translation: you burn fewer calories at rest, making it harder to maintain or lose weight.

👉 Mistake 2: Only hitting your minimum protein goal.
If you’re barely scraping by with the minimum protein you should eat, your muscle mass may suffer. And less muscle = an even lower BMR, because muscle burns more calories than fat—even at rest. Want a more efficient metabolism? Protein is your bestie.

👉 Mistake 3: Not exercising, especially strength training.
Skipping workouts leads to—you guessed it—muscle loss. Without strength training, it’s harder to preserve (let alone build) muscle, and that downward spiral affects your BMR, too.

Sure, you can lose weight by eating as little as possible, only aiming for that minimum protein goal, and not working out. Butttttt you’re honestly doing yourself and your metabolism a HUGE disservice.

At some point in your WLS journey, it stops being the center of your universe. It stops being so “important.”

Yes, you’ll always be a WLS patient for life—there are long-term givens like prioritizing protein, drinking your water, taking your vitamins, and honoring the tool that changed your life. But here’s the thing no one really tells you: WLS stops being your whole identity.

Weight loss isn’t always your #1 focus anymore. You begin to discover who you are outside of the need to lose weight.

And while it’s terrifying to let go of that focus—because for so long, it’s what drove you, motivated you, maybe even defined you—it’s also incredibly freeing.

You start to realize:

You’re not just a number on the scale.
Your worth isn’t tied to the size of your jeans.
There’s so much more to life than hitting a goal weight.
You begin to fill your life with things that have nothing to do with weight loss—relationships, passions, goals that light you up in completely different ways.

It’s a weird transition, and honestly, no one really prepares you for it. But it’s also one of the most empowering parts of the journey.

When I forget my ADHD/anxiety meds vs. when I remember... the difference is literally night and day 🫠➡️✨

It’s no secret that my brain needs a little extra dopamine to function properly. Without my meds, my thoughts spiral, my energy drops, and the simplest tasks feel overwhelming. But when I take them? While still a struggle some days, and while I still need to work on staying focused, I can show up as the best version of myself. The proof is right here.

So here’s my question: why is it so easy for society to recognize that some brains need medication for focus, anxiety, or depression… but when it comes to obesity, it’s met with judgment or disbelief?

If you’re struggling with hunger, cravings, or weight, isn’t it possible that your brain and body might need help too? Whether that’s support, therapy, lifestyle changes—or yes, even medication—why is it so hard to believe that some people simply need the right tools to thrive? 🤔

Ugly Easy Food: Chicken Taco Bowls

I don’t typically follow recipes and I don’t diligently measure each portion, so I don’t have the calories or macros for this. I also filmed this in real-time so you could see how I put a meal together using my Bariatric Meal Plate method!

The Bariatric Meal Plate Method helps me visualize what I’m eating to make sure I am getting enough protein with fiber, fat and carbs like you see in this Chicken Taco Bowl!

Here’s what’s inside:
- @amylufoods taco chicken crumbles - already cooked & seasoned, just heated up in a pan (protein)
- diced up a tomato (veggie)
- mixed into a bowl with some cheese & sour cream (fat & flavor, can sub greek yogurt for sour cream for more protein)
- pickled onions (veggie + flavor)
- would have added some black beans /avocado if I had them for extra fiber (but I ran out )
- hot sauce (flavor)
- crumbled some tortilla chips on top (carb)

Oliver tried carrots for the first time today, and let me tell you—he couldn’t get enough of them! 🥕😍 Watching him enjoy this vibrant, nutrient-packed veggie reminded me how carrots are not just great for babies—they’re amazing for us as bariatric patients, too!

Here’s why carrots deserve a spot on your plate:

✨ For Baby: Carrots are loaded with beta-carotene (Vitamin A superstar!), which supports healthy vision and immune function. Their natural sweetness makes them a favorite for little taste buds, and they’re easy to mash into a smooth, baby-friendly consistency.

✨ For You: As a bariatric patient, carrots are a low-calorie, high-fiber veggie packed with Vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants. They support digestion, healing, and overall health—plus, they’re super versatile and easy to prep. It’s also a MYTH that they’re “high in sugar.” 1 medium carrot is only ~6g of carb with 3g of sugar and 2g of fiber!

💡 Quick Carrot Recipe:
Peel and slice 2-3 carrots into sticks or coins.
Steam or boil until tender.
Mash with a little unsalted butter and a pinch of ginger or cinnamon for a flavorful puree.
Drizzle with a touch of honey and sprinkle with fresh parsley for a simple and delicious side dish.
