What’s the Deal with Fruit after WLS?

Is there anything better than fresh melon in the summertime?

It makes me so sad that so many bariatric patients miss out on the simple joys in life because they are so afraid of carbs. They try to stick to “just protein” all day but then just end up snacking on slider foods all afternoon and evening… then beating themselves up and feeling like a failure

If this is you, let me help you get out of this cycle

All foods fit, just not all the time

I’m a firm believer that the only foods you should never eat again after surgery are the foods that make you sick, you’re allergic to, or just genuinely don’t like.

Sure – some foods you can’t eat right away. You need to follow your post op diet and focus on getting your protein needs met first. But over time, you can and should be having balanced meals and snacks.

The goal after surgery isn’t to eat as little as possible for as long as possible. The goal is also not to avoid eating. The goal is to learn HOW to eat!

What if I told you that having MORE food at your snack times will actually help you eat LESS over the course of the day?

What if I told you that by having MORE carbs intentionally on your plate you are LESS likely to over eat them?

What’s the scoop on carbs anyway?

I’m here to set the record straight and remind you of the importance of a balanced plate and fueling yourself properly.

Carbs have gotten a bad rap, but the truth is, they are an essential part of a healthy diet. Yes, you heard that right!

Carbohydrates, like fruit, provide us with the energy we need to thrive and conquer our goals. It’s all about choosing the right kinds of carbs and incorporating them into a balanced plate.

Carbs provide fiber, vitamins, and minerals that are crucial for your overall well-being.

But here’s the key: balance is everything. Pair those wholesome carbs with lean proteins and healthy fats, and you’ve got a winning combination.

Protein helps with satiety and muscle repair, while fats provide essential nutrients and help you absorb fat-soluble vitamins. Carbs bring the energy and BAM we have a great filling and satisfying, intentional plate!

So, let’s ditch the misconception that WLS patients can’t enjoy carbs and instead focus on creating a plate that fuels and satisfies us.

It’s all about finding what works best for you!

Wrapping it all up

This is your life, and you’ve got one. I think it’s extremely important to enjoy life, which includes having foods you love, like fruit (once you are cleared to do so).
