What’s a stall after WLS and how do you know if you’re in one?

A stall/plateau It is a natural response of your body adjusting to the rapid changes its undergoing.

A plateau/stall is when your body weight does not change for an extended period of time (like 2+ months). A couple of weeks with little to no weight loss is NORMAL on a bariatric journey!

This is when you feel like your body just said “ok, well I’m done losing weight now”. This does NOT mean you did anything wrong!

What can you do if you are in one?

Well… it really depends!

Should you stay consistent or switch things up? In most situations, consistency is key. too often I see people trying to change things up when what your body really needs is:

  • routine
  • consistency
  • patience

Before switching things up or, even worse, attempting a silly ‘pouch reset’ you need to ask yourself a few questions…

What to do If you’ve tried “everything” and it’s not working

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I hitting my water goal daily?
  • Am I hitting my protein goal daily?
  • Am I eating slowly and mindfully?
  • Am I eating meals and avoiding grazing?
  • Am I moving my body?
  • Am I getting a good night’s sleep?
  • Am I limiting slider foods?
  • Am I managing stress levels?

If you are being consistent with these things, that’s a pretty big indicator that your body needs time. Have some grace for yourself, trust the process, and keep going!

If you’re NOT doing these things, I would recommend seeing where you can start being more consistent.

Instead of trying to cut something out of your routine or force yourself to do or add more of something. Try giving yourself the space to practice these daily habits.
